Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka underscored the necessity of Pacific regionalism as the primary means to address the various challenges facing the Pacific region at the Second Pacific Regional and National Security Conference. Expressing his concerns about a “polycrisis” impacting the Blue Pacific, he highlighted the threats posed by economic uncertainty, climate change, and illegal fishing, which not only harm the economy but also endanger the fragile environment of the Pacific.

During his speech, Rabuka pointed out that the Pacific’s waters are increasingly being used for transnational crime and conflicts beyond its borders, as well as dangerous weapons testing. He emphasized that these multifaceted issues require a unified Pacific response based on regional cooperation, which he sees as pivotal for achieving security, stability, and prosperity.

Echoing sentiment from previous discussions, Rabuka noted that true peace extends beyond the work of police and security forces; it involves building harmonious communities where people are free from fear and want. He cited findings from the 2024 Foreign Policy White Paper, warning that division within the region could lead to increased insecurity and instability.

Leaders at the conference were urged to collaborate to safeguard the Blue Pacific for current and future generations, embodying a sense of unity that resonates with Rabuka’s earlier discussions about the importance of solidarity among Pacific nations in facing global challenges.

This emphasis on cooperative strategies and shared responsibility offers a beacon of hope for creating a robust and secure environment in the Pacific. By fostering a sense of unity and cooperation, Rabuka aims to enhance the region’s resilience against the pressing threats it faces.

The call for a collective approach highlights the optimism that through collaboration, the Pacific nations can effectively navigate globalization challenges while protecting their unique identities and ecosystems.
