Praveen Chand, the principal of Nakasi High School, is advocating for secondary schools to adopt collaborative inter-house competitions in the future. This call follows the notable success of a recent event held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, which saw participation from Nakasi High School, Noco Secondary, Nabua Secondary, Rewa High, and Davuilevu Methodist High School.
Chand highlights several benefits of these collaborations, such as fostering a more competitive atmosphere for students and sharing the costs of venues, which can be particularly advantageous for smaller schools. He pointed out that smaller institutions often struggle to create competitive intensity on their own, emphasizing the importance of joining forces: “Small schools cannot build intensity on their own, so we came together, the five schools and said let us all put together our efforts and create a better platform for our children so they can be given high-level competition, preparing them for the bigger national competitions.”
This initiative aligns with a growing trend in Fiji, where collaborative athletic events are becoming more popular. Such efforts not only facilitate increased participation but also promote a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship, critical for the development of students. Similar inter-house competitions, like those at Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School and Ratu Kadavulevu School, have also demonstrated the revitalizing effects of these events on school spirit and athleticism, nurturing young talent in a supportive community.
Looking forward, Nakasi High School is committed to continuing its hosting of combined inter-house competitions. These events serve as an excellent platform for students to display their skills while preparing for larger competitions, such as national championships. This collaborative approach presents a promising pathway for the future of sports in Fiji’s educational sector, encouraging schools to unite for the greater benefit of their students. The hope is that through such teamwork, schools can foster a new generation of talented athletes who will excel both locally and nationally.
