Fiji National Rugby League chairman Akuila Masi has emphasized the need for a united approach towards the significant investment made by the Australian government in rugby league across the Pacific, instead of viewing it as a threat. This comes after concerns were expressed by a senior official from the Fiji Rugby Union, who indicated that such investment could deplete local talent and weaken domestic competitions.

Masi stated that this funding is an important acknowledgment of the vital role rugby league plays in Pacific communities, identities, and development. He noted that rugby league has transitioned from being a fringe sport to a crucial platform for numerous Pasifika youths, many of whom represent their nations on the global stage with pride.

The chairman clarified that the financial support from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the National Rugby League (NRL) should not be seen as mere handouts, but as strategic investments aimed at promoting an inclusive sporting future for the Pacific region. “Both codes can and must thrive side-by-side,” Masi asserted, referring to both rugby league and rugby union.

Highlighting the international success of the Fiji Bati, despite facing funding challenges, Masi praised their achievements, which include World Cup semi-final appearances and a growing pool of talent at both local and international levels. He encouraged a collaborative and transparent approach in developing rugby league that would not detract from rugby union, but instead elevate the sporting landscape across the Pacific.

These sentiments align with a broader initiative already in motion, which includes ongoing discussions between FNRL, NRL officials, and the potential for increased talent pathways and coaching support as part of a long-term strategy aimed at enhancing rugby league in the Pacific Islands. This collaboration showcases a commitment to developing local talent and providing young athletes with enhanced opportunities, thus fostering a vibrant sports culture in the region.

The ongoing partnership and investments represent a hopeful future not only for rugby league in Fiji but also for the positive impacts it can have on community development and youth engagement through sports. As stakeholders come together, there is optimism that rugby league can serve as a powerful vehicle for growth and opportunity in the Pacific.
