The Minister for Women and Children, Lynda Tabuya, has emphasized the need for a collaborative approach between the Government and Opposition to enhance human rights in Fiji. In her remarks following International Human Rights Day, she highlighted the importance of establishing common ground to effectively address the needs of all Fijians.
Ms. Tabuya underscored the necessity of bipartisanship on critical issues that impact citizens, advocating for the development of stronger partnerships within Parliament. She pointed out that while government members already collaborate within standing committees, there is an opportunity for greater involvement of opposition members in government initiatives.
One such initiative she referenced is the Anti-Pornography Task Force, which aims to combat online exploitation, particularly concerning children. She emphasized the need for unity on issues surrounding child protection and noted that any legal changes would require support from the entire House.
Moreover, Ms. Tabuya acknowledged the importance of accountability, stating that both the government and the opposition must be responsible for addressing human rights issues in Fiji. She expressed hope that fostering alliances within the government could lead to positive progress.
She also stressed the value of open dialogue, asserting that constructive interactions between the Government and Opposition are crucial for creating a more inclusive and accountable framework for human rights.
This call for bipartisanship reflects a hopeful vision for the future of human rights in Fiji, where collaboration can lead to meaningful change. By working together, the Government and Opposition have the potential to significantly improve the lives of all citizens and ensure that their rights are protected effectively.
