In a historic moment for inclusivity, Ghandi Bhawan Primary School joined forces with Lautoka Special School for Education (LSSE) to celebrate Holi together for the first time on Friday. The event marked a significant collaboration between a mainstream institution and a special school, underscoring the importance of unity and diversity.
Kailash Pillay, head of LSSE, expressed his excitement about this partnership, highlighting that during his eight years at the school, no mainstream school had previously reached out in such a manner. He remarked, “We are indeed privileged and happy that a mainstream school has really thought about a special school, bringing their students and their singing talents.”
Nilesh Sharma, head of Ghandi Bhawan Primary School, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that their 620 students and staff were thrilled to participate in the Holi festivities. He noted the proactive role parents and the Ministry of Education played in supporting this initiative. “We wanted to create a pathway when students complete their studies from LSSE. We welcome them and want our students to understand that inclusiveness and diversity are important,” Sharma remarked.
Holi celebrations in Fiji are traditionally vibrant, embodying joy, unity, and positivity. The festival bridges cultural divides, as seen in past gatherings that emphasize the collaborative spirit of this occasion, like those held at DAV Girls College. Teachers and community leaders often highlight Holi as not just a festive event but an enriching cultural experience that fosters deeper community bonds and understanding.
This inclusive celebration at LSSE signifies a hopeful step towards promoting acceptance and cooperation among diverse groups in Fiji. By merging efforts with LSSE, Ghandi Bhawan Primary School has set a precedent for future collaborations that honor both educational and cultural inclusivity. As more schools and communities come together in celebration, it lays a foundation for a brighter future marked by understanding and shared experiences.
