The need for collective action to tackle urgent social issues like drug abuse, child neglect, elder abuse, and domestic violence was emphasized by Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Her remarks were made during the Annual Fire Walking Pooja at the Wairuku Gangamma Temple in Rakiraki.

Minister Kiran urged faith-based organizations and cultural gatherings to serve as platforms for raising awareness and inspiring action around these pressing concerns. She highlighted the importance of these gatherings in fostering unity among families and communities through shared values.

During her visit, Kiran praised the Sangam Committee for successfully organizing the annual event, which brought together men, women, children, and youth in a spirit of faith and togetherness. She also expressed gratitude to the elders who had the vision to establish both the temple and the nearby Wairuku School, famously attended by significant figures in Fiji’s history, like Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna.

Additionally, Kiran met with local women, encouraging them to register their women’s groups and participate in the Ministry’s leadership development programs, aimed at amplifying women’s voices in decision-making processes. She firmly believes that through faith, culture, and compassion, Fijians can work together towards a safer and stronger future.

Similar sentiments were echoed in past discussions about the need for government ministers to unite against the rising social issues, with a focus on coordinated approaches to rehabilitation and prevention efforts. Kiran’s project aligns with broader initiatives that advocate for increased community involvement to address challenges related to domestic violence, substance abuse, and the well-being of vulnerable populations.

Through such community-driven actions and the vision articulated by leaders like Kiran, there is a hopeful outlook for Fiji to foster a safer environment for all. The ongoing commitment to collaborative efforts signifies a positive trajectory towards addressing these significant societal challenges.
