Acting Minister for Disaster Management Viliame Gavoka has emphasized that disaster resilience is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the government. During his speech at the Disaster Risk Resilience Scorecard Workshop for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) held in Suva, he highlighted the importance of commitment from all sectors and individuals in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.
Gavoka, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, called on leaders, educators, business owners, non-profits, and citizens to take ownership of their shared future. He stated, “Today, we stand united to confront the pressing realities that Small Island Developing States continue to face—climate change, natural disasters, and an array of unforeseen risks.”
While acknowledging the seriousness of these challenges, Gavoka noted that they should not define Fiji. Instead, they prompt a call to action for innovation, collaboration, and increased resilience. He underscored the value of workshops like this one, which play a crucial role in enhancing understanding, reinforcing frameworks, and fostering collaboration at all levels of governance and community.
“The scorecard is more than just a tool; it serves as a compass guiding us toward measurable improvements in resilience, ensuring that no Fijian is left behind,” Gavoka stated. He urged participants to leverage this platform to implement transformative actions that secure livelihoods and protect industries, showcasing Fiji’s commitment to resilience and adaptation on the global stage.
As the workshop progresses, Gavoka expressed hope that the voices and ideas shared would contribute to shaping a resilient Fiji—one capable of not only withstanding adversity but thriving in its wake.
This proactive stance reflects the broader understanding that the effects of climate change and natural disasters will increasingly impact communities across the globe, especially in vulnerable regions like SIDS. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility, Fiji sets a positive example for other nations facing similar challenges. Through collective efforts and innovative solutions, there is potential for growth, adaptation, and improved resilience in the face of adversity.
