Uniting for a Drug-Free Future: The 2024 Ratu Sukuna Bowl Challenge

The 2024 Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition represents more than just sports participation. Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, conveyed this message during the official launch at the Naval Base in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday.

This year’s theme for the Ratu Sukuna Bowl is “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation.” Accepting the challenge from Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, Kalouniwai emphasized the responsibilities of the respective forces and their collective efforts for a better Fiji.

“I believe it is not merely about winning or losing; it’s about the spirit inherent in our forces, who we are, what we represent, and what we can accomplish for the future of this country,” Kalouniwai stated. He noted that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has been on a path of reconciliation in recent months, aiming to forge a new way forward.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force is grappling with the crisis of drug-related issues affecting communities. Kalouniwai expressed hope that the upcoming events embodying the spirit of the Sukuna Bowl would encourage both forces to maintain high moral standards in their responsibilities.

Juki Chew, while challenging the RFMF, declared that Nasova is the rightful home of the Ratu Sukuna Bowl. He stated, “The Fiji Police Force is prepared and eager to defend the Ratu Sukuna tanoa.” Chew highlighted the ongoing social issues in communities, advocating for a stance against drugs.

Last year, police retained the Ratu Sukuna Bowl after a draw of 11-11 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi. Chew reiterated the importance of the Ratu Sukuna tanoa, which made its debut in 2022, proclaiming its home to be Nasova.

Salman Khan, chief commercial officer of Vodafone Fiji, remarked, “Fiji is a nation passionately interested in rugby, and this event showcases our disciplined forces competing not just for victory, but for a trophy that signifies camaraderie, discipline, and spirited rivalry.” He urged players to compete with integrity, passion, and pride, remembering they carry the aspirations of past champions and future generations.

The Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge is tentatively scheduled for November 8 at the HFC Bank Stadium, with additional sporting events set to commence that week.
