Uniting Faiths for Our Planet: An Ecumenical Prayer Service in Suva

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Suva, in partnership with several Faith-Based Organizations, will conduct an Ecumenical and Interreligious Season of Creation Prayer Service on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Ratu Sukuna Park from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

The Season of Creation, which occurs every year from September 1 to October 4, is a global initiative dedicated to prayer and action aimed at safeguarding our shared environment. This period serves as a special occasion to honor God as the Creator and acknowledge Creation as a divine gift that calls for cooperation in its maintenance and protection.

This year’s theme, “To Hope and Act with Creation,” encourages individuals of faith to respond with optimism amid the pressing global challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution.

In light of the rising eco-anxiety faced by many, people of faith are urged to draw strength from their beliefs and engage in significant actions through prayer, service, and solidarity.

Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, the leader of the Catholic Church in Fiji, emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, “It is crucial that we all join together through our faith to promote the message of protecting our common home, which is one of the key messages at this Ecumenical Service.”

The organizers hope that everyone in attendance will contribute to the message of environmental stewardship and the critical role of faith in safeguarding our planet, while uniting in prayer and action for the Earth.
