Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has called on religious organizations in Fiji to aid the government’s efforts to tackle drug-related challenges. Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Fiji, he expressed concern over the increasing presence of hard drugs in the nation.
Prasad highlighted the alarming rise in drug cases among youth and schools, insisting that immediate action is necessary. He emphasized the vital role faith-based organizations can play in combating these issues.
“I strongly believe that faith-based organizations like ISKCON can significantly contribute to our fight against drugs,” he stated. He underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the social problems that affect the community.
By embracing values of humility, service, and devotion, he said, society can tackle the social ills threatening neighborhoods while pursuing a future characterized by peace and progress. He urged a commitment to unity and service while seeking divine blessings on the journey of nation-building, fostering an environment where peace and harmony reign.
Prasad commended ISKCON Fiji for promoting a lifestyle that aligns with the government’s vision of nation-building through love and unity, emphasizing sustainability and environmental awareness. He praised ISKCON’s approach of simplicity, self-sufficiency, and living in harmony with nature as both environmentally beneficial and spiritually enriching.
He recognized ISKCON’s humanitarian efforts as a testament to societal compassion and dedication to service. During natural disasters and crises, ISKCON members have been actively involved in providing relief and support.
Prasad also lauded ISKCON’s positive influence on younger generations, stating that the organization instills values of human life, moral discipline, and responsible citizenship, helping to shape future leaders committed to serving the common good. The teachings of dharma and the sanctity of life imparted by ISKCON serve as essential guidance for youth, directing them towards integrity, compassion, and leadership.
