Poverty is not just a lack of financial resources; it is a multifaceted social issue that involves deprivation of basic human rights, dignity, and access to essential services, according to Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection.
Speaking at the observance of the 2024 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, she remarked that poverty has various dimensions, some of which are visible while others remain hidden, yet all are interconnected.
Ms. Tabuya emphasized the necessity of recognizing and addressing the social and institutional injustices that perpetuate cycles of poverty and marginalization. “This year, we highlight the significance of unity and collaboration among all segments of society—government, civil organizations, and individuals—to foster an environment where everyone can succeed,” she stated.
She noted that the Fijian government has implemented approximately 100 programs aimed at reducing poverty, enhancing access to services, and increasing income for citizens living at or below the poverty line.
The government’s initiatives encompass various sectors, including social welfare programs that assist women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Other measures include housing assistance for low-income earners to promote home ownership, infrastructural development to improve access to essential services such as road and bridge upgrades, rural electrification, and provision of clean water.
Ms. Tabuya also mentioned efforts to enhance healthcare access through a free medicine scheme, community health workers, and initiatives that support farmers, fishers, and small business entrepreneurs.
“We must advocate for policies and practices that encourage equity, justice, and inclusion. It is our responsibility to ensure that vulnerable populations—such as women, children, people living with disabilities, the elderly, and marginalized groups—are not only heard but actively participate in decision-making processes that influence their lives,” she said.
She expressed the belief that by fostering a culture of respect and dignity, society can dismantle the barriers that lead to poverty and social exclusion.
“Let us reaffirm our commitment to building just, peaceful, and inclusive societies. Together, we can create a future where every individual has the chance to live free from poverty and oppression. On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, let us act with purpose and solidarity, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
