European Union Deputy Head of Delegation Nereo Peñalver Garcia emphasizes that enhanced international collaboration is essential for tackling the growing issue of cybercrime. Speaking at a recent training session focused on cybercrime and electronic evidence for the Pacific Islands, he highlighted the EU’s commitment to fostering a secure digital environment in the Indo-Pacific region.
Garcia pointed out that the European Union possesses extensive expertise in areas related to non-traditional security, including cybersecurity, countering disinformation, and maritime security. The EU is eager to cooperate with partners to enhance these capabilities. He mentioned the importance of utilizing tools from the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, stating, “Our goal is to strengthen the capacities of our partners to effectively combat cybercrime.”
The session served as a valuable platform for chief justices and directors of public prosecutions from the Pacific region to exchange insights on their challenges. Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo remarked on the workshop’s significance, expressing hope that future collaborations could also involve legal professionals from the Legal Aid Commission and the Fiji Law Society.
This initiative reflects a growing understanding among nations that a united front is necessary to overcome the complexities of cybercrime, showcasing both the EU’s leadership in this area and the Pacific region’s willingness to engage in meaningful cooperation. This collaborative approach not only aims to strengthen legal frameworks but also to foster trust and mutual support among nations, paving the way for safer digital spaces.
