Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, has reiterated his unwavering support for adopting the term ‘Fijian’ as a collective identity for all citizens, aligning with the principles laid out in the 2013 Constitution. While addressing a workshop aimed at enhancing social cohesion in the country, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized that he strongly believes in unifying all Fijians, irrespective of their backgrounds.

Mr. Tikoduadua asserted, “Let me make one thing clear – I believe, unequivocally, that we are all Fijians,” highlighting his dedication to fostering a national identity that rejects divisions based on ethnicity or other factors. He expressed a firm stance against any movements that aim to create rifts within the nation, stating, “Good sense says so.”

He elaborated on the strength derived from Fiji’s diversity, asserting that it enriches the nation and contributes to its resilience. He believes that embracing equality and respect for one another’s unique experiences is essential in laying the groundwork for a future where every Fijian can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

“I am an iTaukei, Christian, Catholic—but I will not claim to own ‘Fijian’ unless it belongs to all of us,” he expressed, reinforcing the idea of collective ownership of the identity. This emphasis on unity is intended not only to fortify Fiji’s social fabric but also to uphold the values of peace, human rights, and civic involvement.

Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the strong partnership with organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, noting that these collaborations symbolize a shared dedication to fostering unity and inclusion. He called for a reaffirmation of their collective resolve to build a cohesive society, where every individual is recognized as a vital member of the Fijian community.

This message of unity and acceptance is not only timely but essential in ensuring that Fiji continues to progress as a harmonious society. By celebrating its diverse cultures while focusing on a common identity, Fiji can pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for all its citizens.
