Trade unions are being urged to take charge in advocating for improved pay and working conditions for teachers, according to Martin Wandera, the Pacific Island Countries director of the International Labour Organization (ILO). He spoke during the Pacific Regional Dialogue on the Go Public! Fund Education in Nadi, highlighting the critical role of unions in combating the global crisis of teacher shortages, which poses a significant threat to the provision of quality education and wider socio-economic development.
Wandera emphasized that quality education requires well-supported educators who are empowered in their roles. He called for teaching jobs to adhere to decent work principles, encompassing fair remuneration, safe working environments, ongoing professional development, and respect for the rights of teachers to organize and engage in social dialogue.
The plight of educators in Fiji has been a growing concern, with similar discussions surrounding the difficulties faced by teachers, especially in rural areas where conditions can be particularly dire. Ongoing advocacy efforts by local teacher unions, like the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU), have highlighted the alarming teacher shortage in the country, where nearly 580 positions remain vacant at the primary level alone.
The situation is exacerbated by many teachers departing for better opportunities abroad due to competitive salaries and working conditions. As Wandera noted, the inclusion of teachers’ unions is paramount in promoting fair pay and advocating for comprehensive educational policies that address the plight of educators.
In a show of solidarity, Wandera highlighted the importance of unity among teacher associations to bolster the campaign for better remuneration and safer working conditions, which are not just essential for teachers but are also pivotal in enhancing the educational experience for students. This dialogue signifies a hopeful pursuit for constructive changes that could lead to the rejuvenation of the teaching profession and ultimately foster an educational environment where both teachers and students can flourish.
