The Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has called on the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) to step in and help resolve an ongoing dispute with Aspen Medical. The union’s Secretary General, John Paul, expressed concerns about the current tensions, emphasizing that they have been exercising restraint to prevent industrial actions at the Lautoka and Ba hospitals.

Paul noted that rather than engaging in constructive dialogue with the union, Aspen Medical has been making provocative statements to the media, which he believes are detrimental to staff morale. He indicated that the union is seriously contemplating a strike involving around 200 workers at these facilities, which employ a diverse group of staff including chefs, ward assistants, medical technicians, and security personnel.

FNPF holds an 80 percent stake in Aspen Medical Healthcare Fiji and has two board representatives, highlighting its significant influence on the situation. The union criticized Aspen Medical for using the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement as a reason to avoid negotiations and pointed out the silence of the FNPF concerning the alleged anti-worker practices within its subsidiary.

Union representatives are urging FNPF to take action and defend workers’ rights, as they serve as custodians of workers’ savings in Fiji. The union’s calls for intervention underline their commitment to upholding fair working conditions in the healthcare sector.

In a positive light, this dispute highlights the proactive approach unions are taking to advocate for their members’ rights and the importance of stakeholder engagement in resolving industrial disputes. The involvement of the FNPF could pave the way for dialogue and a resolution that benefits both workers and the healthcare system in Fiji.

Summary: The CETWUF is urging the FNPF to intervene in a dispute with Aspen Medical as they consider strike action at two hospitals due to unproductive dialogue and inflammatory statements from Aspen. The union seeks to uphold worker rights amid tensions, emphasizing the importance of resolution for staff morale and health service continuity.
