Union members at the Ba and Lautoka hospitals, managed by Aspen Medical, have recently conducted a secret ballot to consider industrial action. John Paul, the national secretary of the Construction, Energy, Timber, Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), highlighted that the ballot involved the union’s 200 members, excluding nurses and doctors.

Earlier this year, the union submitted a log of claims to Aspen Medical, which aimed to address improvements in terms, conditions, and a request for wage increases. Mr. Paul noted that there have been ongoing delays in payment to the union members over the years, contributing to their frustrations regarding deteriorating working conditions.

The secret ballot, taking place over two days, was initiated at the request of the members to pressure Aspen to address their grievances and engage in negotiations regarding the submitted claims.

In response, a spokesperson for Health Care (Fiji) Pty Ltd (HCF) stated that they have maintained an open dialogue with CETWUF and have provided competitive terms and conditions relative to market rates. The spokesperson emphasized that the welfare of both patients and staff is a top priority and that they will implement contingency plans to minimize service disruptions should a strike occur.

This situation reflects the ongoing struggle for fair labor practices and wage equity within the healthcare sector, demonstrating a collective effort by workers to secure better working conditions. The willingness of the union to engage in dialogue indicates a hopeful approach towards resolving these concerns amicably, prioritizing the needs of employees while ensuring continued patient care.

Summary: Union members at Ba and Lautoka hospitals have voted on possible industrial action due to ongoing concerns about working conditions and delayed payments. The union seeks negotiations with Aspen Medical to resolve these issues, while the management emphasizes their commitment to maintaining patient care and addressing labor concerns.
