The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) recently forged a collective agreement with Amex Resources Ltd, marking a significant step for labor relations in Lautoka. During the agreement signing on Monday, CETWUF national secretary John Paul expressed gratitude to Amex for their cooperative spirit, despite the challenges the company faced in recent times.
Amex Resources Ltd, an employer of over 100 staff, notably has around 80 union members. During this meeting, it was also highlighted that Amex had distributed Christmas bonuses to workers. Mr. Paul mentioned improvements in working conditions resulting from the agreement and indicated that both parties plan to reconvene in March 2025 to further discuss employee compensation matters.
This achievement reflects CETWUF’s dedication to advocating for workers’ rights and could inspire other employers to engage constructively with union representatives, promoting better working conditions across the industry. Mr. Paul’s call for other employers to cooperate with unions emphasizes the critical role such organizations play in protecting workers’ entitlements.
The successful negotiation of this collective agreement is a positive affirmation of the power of collaboration between unions and companies, fostering a work environment that values and respects employee rights and needs.
Ultimately, this initiative is not only a win for the union and its members but also serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for constructive dialogue and mutual benefit in future employer-employee relationships.
