In 1984, the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) took a stand against Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School in Suva concerning the dismissal of Raman Lal Vasram, a senior science teacher. Vasram, a New Zealand science graduate, was terminated by the school’s board of governors without any explanation, a move described in a January 9 article from that year.

FTU Secretary Pramod Rae issued an ultimatum to the board, demanding a discussion about Vasram’s dismissal within seven days or risk industrial action. The union alleged that Vasram had been unfairly dismissed in retaliation for voicing his grievances regarding his rejected application for leave to compete at the Sixth World Tae Kwon Do Championships in Copenhagen, which had been recommended by the Ministry of Education but ignored by the school board.

The encounter escalated when it was revealed that Vasram’s sacking might be linked to his role as president of the Fiji Tae Kwon Do Confederation, indicating a potential conflict between his professional commitments and the school’s interests. Rae emphasized that the union was committed to addressing perceived injustices against its members, asserting their readiness to act if the school did not engage in dialogue.

In a response, the principal of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, Gopal Bhai Patel, refrained from commenting on the situation, stating that the matter was between the board and Vasram.

This incident resonates with more recent events where academic institutions in Fiji have faced scrutiny over governance and the rights of educators, highlighting ongoing tensions between authority and the advocacy for teachers’ rights. The FTU’s proactive stance illustrates the importance of unions in representing the interests of workers, a principle that continues to be significant in contemporary discussions about labor rights in educational settings.

Overall, the FTU’s potential actions could foster greater awareness and prompt reform within the educational system, ensuring that teachers feel secure in expressing concerns without the fear of retribution.
