A police officer from Vunika in Labasa is currently undergoing an investigation after being captured on CCTV allegedly purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. The incident reportedly took place last Thursday and was witnessed by a former police officer who observed the uniformed officer leaving the market with the drugs.
Following this incident, Paul Jaduram, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that the market master promptly reviewed the CCTV footage after receiving the complaint and subsequently reported the findings to the Labasa Police Station due to the officer’s uniformed status.
Mr. Jaduram emphasized the public’s awareness of police officers potentially engaging in drug-related activities, encouraging them to share information with trusted individuals to facilitate action against such behaviors. He also urged parents to keep an eye on their children, as there have been reports of youth involved in drug transactions.
“The municipal market is a hub of activity and we must come together to combat the drug issue,” he stated.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, has confirmed that the investigation is actively ongoing.
This situation highlights the community’s vigilance and the importance of collaboration between the public and law enforcement to address drug-related challenges. While it’s disheartening to see a police officer allegedly involved in such activities, there is hope in the proactive response from locals and authorities aiming to confront and reduce drug-related issues in the area.
In summary, the incident underscores a growing concern in Labasa regarding drug dealings, emphasizing the need for community unity in tackling such challenges.
