A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is currently under investigation after being recorded on CCTV allegedly purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. This incident reportedly took place last Thursday and was brought to light by a former police officer who observed the officer, in uniform, leaving the market with the illicit substances.
Paul Jaduram, the chair of the Labasa Town Council special administration, confirmed that after receiving the complaint, the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and promptly reported the situation to the Labasa Police Station given that the individual was in police uniform. “The public is aware of certain police officers’ involvement in drug activities, and they can disclose information to individuals they trust,” Jaduram stated. He emphasized the importance of community vigilance regarding drug-related behavior, particularly among youth, urging parents to be alert as some children have been noted to engage in drug transactions.
Jaduram pointed out that the municipal market, being one of the busiest locations in town, experiences significant foot traffic, which can make it a hotspot for such activities. He called for a unified community effort to combat the ongoing issue of drug abuse.
Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka has confirmed that an investigation into the matter is underway.
In summary, this article highlights the alarming issue of drug-related activities involving a police officer and reinforces the need for community involvement to address drug abuse.
