A police officer from Vunika in Labasa is currently under investigation after being recorded on CCTV purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. The incident allegedly occurred last Thursday. An ex-police officer witnessed the officer in uniform leaving the market with drugs, which raised immediate concerns.

Paul Jaduram, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that the market master promptly reviewed the CCTV footage upon receiving the complaint. Subsequently, the market master reported the incident to the Labasa Police Station, highlighting the gravity of the situation given the officer’s uniformed status.

Jaduram emphasized that the community is aware of certain police officers allegedly involved in drug activities and encouraged the public to share any relevant information with trusted individuals. He acknowledged that the market is a hub of activity, drawing crowds due to its proximity to essential transport stands and shops, making vigilant supervision crucial.

He urged parents to remain watchful as they may know children who are involved in the drug trade. Jaduram reiterated the importance of collective efforts in tackling the ongoing drug issues within the community.

Divisional Police Commander (DPC) for the North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, stated that the investigation into the matter is still in progress.

This incident underscores the need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement as communities unite against drug-related issues. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle many societies face with narcotics, but with collective efforts, positive change can be achieved. Communities working together can foster a safer environment, ensuring a better future for the youth.
