UniFiji Breaks Record Enrolment as It Expands to Twin Graduation Ceremonies

The University of Fiji (UniFiji) is witnessing remarkable growth, evidenced by an unprecedented increase in student enrolment and an expansion of graduation ceremonies. Currently, the university serves over 3,200 students, marking the highest enrolment figures in its history, drawing attendees not just from Fiji but also from the broader Pacific region.

In response to this surge, UniFiji has transitioned from holding one annual graduation ceremony to hosting two each year, accommodating the rising number of graduates and reflecting the institution’s growing reputation across the region. Professor Shaista Shameem, the Vice-Chancellor of UniFiji, attributes this success to the university’s commitment to supporting a diverse and dynamic student body, enabling them to juggle their studies alongside work and family responsibilities.

“The growth underpins future plans for new campuses in Labasa and Suva Central by 2026, expanding access further,” Professor Shameem stated. This semester, more than 300 students are set to graduate, showcasing the university’s effectiveness in maintaining high completion rates and a strong focus on recognizing student achievement and community involvement.

UniFiji’s distinctive teaching methodology plays a crucial role in enhancing graduate employability and societal contributions. “It is not what we teach, in terms of subject areas, at UniFiji, but how we teach it, that is the secret of our success,” Shameem remarked. This approach is rooted in a blend of traditional educational philosophies and modern self-directed learning strategies, as reflected in recent national reviews and international accreditation efforts.

The university strives to uphold high academic standards and innovate advanced-level qualifications while advocating for clearer distinctions in the educational framework amidst evolving global standards. “The curriculum integrates global trends, including AI relevance, to ensure graduates remain competitive and forward-thinking,” she added. This preparation empowers students to prosper in shifting job markets and create significant contributions to their communities.

UniFiji is optimistic that many of its graduates will return as postgraduates or staff members, reinforcing the institution’s growth and its vision of becoming a leader in higher education within the Pacific region.
