An agreement has been established between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Fiji’s Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management to enhance the social and economic wellbeing of individuals living in rural and maritime areas. This ‘Implementing Partner Agreement’, signed recently, seeks to tackle a multitude of challenges that these communities encounter, including limited access to healthcare, incidents of gender-based violence, family planning resources, economic opportunities, and initiatives for youth and women empowerment, as well as improving disaster response.
Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted that UNFPA has played a pivotal role over the years by implementing tailored programs that cater specifically to the needs of rural and maritime residents. He expressed gratitude for the support received since 2020, particularly in the Northern Division. According to Mr. Talemaibua, geographical isolation and limited access to services often exacerbate the struggles of these communities, especially vulnerable groups such as women, youths, and marginalized populations.
He emphasized the importance of UNFPA’s interventions in bridging these gaps, ensuring that no one is overlooked regardless of the remoteness of their locations or the severity of the obstacles they encounter. Furthermore, he noted that the Ministry is dedicated to providing equal access to essential services and economic opportunities for all rural residents, as part of its broader strategic priorities aimed at improving living standards and fostering a resilient rural economy.
This partnership presents a hopeful path forward for the enhancement of living conditions in Fiji’s rural and maritime communities, promising increased support and resources to address pressing issues and promote sustainable development.
In summary, the collaboration between UNFPA and the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development is a significant step towards improving the wellbeing of Fiji’s underserved communities, with a focus on access to services and empowerment, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and resilience in the face of hardship.
