A new initiative between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Fiji’s Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management aims to enhance the living conditions and overall wellbeing of rural and maritime populations in the country. The ‘Implementing Partner Agreement’ was signed recently and seeks to tackle various challenges that these communities face. Key focus areas include improving access to healthcare, addressing gender-based violence, promoting family planning, expanding economic opportunities, empowering youth and women, and enhancing disaster response mechanisms.

Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the UNFPA’s ongoing efforts, which have been tailored to meet the unique needs of these communities since 2020. He noted that geographical isolation, limited services, and socioeconomic struggles intensify the difficulties faced by vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and marginalized communities.

Talemaibua commended the UN agency for its vital support in the Northern Division, emphasizing that the aim is to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their location or the challenges they encounter, receive essential services and support. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to improving the standard of living and developing the rural economy, ensuring that these communities remain productive, progressive, safe, and resilient.

This partnership embodies a promising step forward for Fiji’s rural and maritime communities, with the potential to significantly uplift their quality of life and foster sustainable development. By addressing critical issues and providing targeted support, this initiative can help bridge gaps in access and empower these communities to thrive.

Summary: The UNFPA and Fiji’s Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development have signed an agreement to improve the wellbeing of rural and maritime communities. The initiative addresses healthcare access, gender-based violence, family planning, economic opportunities, and disaster response, focusing on empowering women, youths, and marginalized groups. This collaboration is a vital step towards enhancing the living standards and resilience of these communities.
