A significant new book focusing on the history of Indians in Fiji is set to be launched at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Odisha, India. The book, titled “Fiji Mein Bhartiyon Ka Itihas Tatha Unka Jeevan (1879 – 1947),” was authored by distinguished writer and academic Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi.
Dr. Chaturvedi describes her work as an exploration of the lives and struggles faced by indentured laborers from India. She emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by the Indian diaspora, underscoring the need to preserve their stories for future generations.
The book sheds light on the dark chapter of indentured labor, often referred to as “Coolies,” which reflects the harsh reality of British colonial rule in India. The legacy of these laborers, who were subjected to grueling conditions across regions like South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, Guyana, and Fiji, represents a painful aspect of history known among the “Girmitiyas.”
This launch not only serves as a celebration of the Indian heritage in Fiji but also acts as a reminder of the resilience and perseverance of a community that has shaped the cultural landscape of Fiji.
Overall, this initiative to document and share such histories is a hopeful step toward greater recognition and appreciation of the diverse narratives that form our global community.
