A new book focused on the history of Indians in Fiji is set to be launched today during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Odisha, India. Titled “Fiji Mein Bhartiyon Ka Itihas Tatha Unka Jeevan (1879 – 1947)” or “The Life and History of Indians in Fiji (1879 -1947)”, this significant work is authored by distinguished writer and scholar Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi.

Dr. Chaturvedi emphasizes that the book delves into the lives and struggles of indentured laborers from India, shedding light on their experiences. She expresses that this project serves as a vital acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by the Indian diaspora, highlighting the importance of preserving their histories for future generations.

The narrative also addresses the painful legacy of indentured labor, often referred to as “Coolies,” which marks a dark chapter in the history of British colonial rule in India. Countries like South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, Guyana, and Fiji share a history fraught with the exploitation of “Girmitiyas,” who faced harsh working conditions and endured significant hardship.

This book launch not only celebrates the contribution of Indians to Fiji but also seeks to remind readers of the resilience and tenacity of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

As communities worldwide recognize their histories, this publication can foster greater understanding and appreciation for the diverse experiences that shape cultural identities. It is a hopeful stepping stone towards ensuring that the stories of the Indian diaspora continue to resonate and inspire future generations.
