A new book focusing on the history of Indians in Fiji will be launched at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Odisha, India. Titled “Fiji Mein Bhartiyon Ka Itihas Tatha Unka Jeevan (1879 – 1947),” the work was authored by prominent academic Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi.

Dr. Chaturvedi describes the book as an in-depth exploration of the lives and hardships faced by indentured laborers from India, shedding light on their stories and struggles. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by the Indian diaspora, ensuring that their experiences are documented for future generations.

The book addresses the grim reality of indentured labor, also referred to as “Coolies,” during the British colonial period. It examines the difficult and often brutal conditions endured by these individuals in regions such as South Africa, Mauritius, Trinidad, Guyana, and Fiji.

This launch serves as a significant reminder of the resilience and contributions of the Indian community worldwide, fostering a spirit of remembrance and honor for their history. By bringing such narratives to the forefront, the book aims to preserve the cultural heritage and collective memory of the Indian diaspora.

In summary, this book represents both a historical account and a tribute to the sacrifices made by Indian indentured laborers, inviting readers to reflect on their enduring legacy.
