Only three grassroots clubs have managed to capture the esteemed McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s title since its inception in 2010. Red Rock, led by the late Lote Rasiga, along with star players like Peni Gaunimeke, Jasa Veremalua, and Jone Macilai, clinched the championship in both 2010 and 2012. Following them, Yamacia lifted the I-Wau trophy in 2013, paving the way for Semi Kunatani’s national team call-up which launched his international career. The third team to win was First Light Taveuni in 2013, guided by playmaker Lemeki Tulele.

This year, several grassroots teams are ready to compete, including Vacalea from Kadavu, Ravuka Sharks, Yaro Chiefs, Dominion Brothers, Henibua, and Devo Babas. Devo Babas, having secured numerous significant victories in Fiji’s top tournaments, are particularly poised to contend for the title.

The Police Rugby Club has dominated the men’s competition with five wins, including a remarkable streak of three consecutive titles from 2018 to 2020. Other notable champions include the Wardens, Army, and Fiji Babas. This year, the competition will see 13 overseas teams, including the USA 7s, India’s Chennai Bulls, the Aussie Select, Japan SDS, Solomon Islands’ Uso Tasi, the British Army, and New Zealand Development. Notably, no international team has ever won the men’s title in the tournament’s history.

The champion team this year will take home an impressive prize of $50,000—the largest prize money awarded in a 7s tournament in Fiji. The event kicks off next Thursday, featuring eight women’s and youth matches before the men’s competition starts with the match between Drua and the British Army at 11:40 AM. Fans can catch all the Coral Coast 7s action on FBC Sports. For overseas viewers, a $99 FJD package ensures that they won’t miss any of the electrifying three days of rugby action.

This tournament not only highlights the talent coming from grassroots teams but also continues to bring together the best of local and international rugby, fostering a sense of community and sporting excellence.
