Veiyasana Providers triumphed as the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 sevens champions during the Suva leg, clinching victory against Ca’au with a close score of 12-10 on Saturday. The team, headed by coach Sireli Bobo, overcame expectations by defeating stronger opponents to reach the Cup final.

In a conversation with SUNsports, Bobo expressed his appreciation for the competitive atmosphere of the tournament and the valuable experience gained by the team. He noted, “The boys played beyond what I had expected,” demonstrating their resilience and skill, especially as the team was only assembled just hours before the tournament began.

The Veiyasana Providers team included players from various institutions such as Ba River, High Performance Unit, Queen Victoria School, and Nabua. This coalition formed to ensure that talented players had the opportunity to compete, as many were previously overlooked for other teams. Bobo emphasized their determination, stating, “We came here with a goal and that is to win. Slaying the giants is what this team is known for, and I believe we did just that.”

They achieved significant victories leading up to the final, overcoming QVSOB in the quarterfinals with a score of 14-12 and narrowly defeating Village Boys 12-7 in a thrilling semifinal. The team showcased their developing chemistry, which improved through the matches of the tournament.

Bobo acknowledged the importance of such series for young rugby players, stating that it provides an invaluable platform for rising stars to demonstrate their abilities. He also highlighted the healthy competition from other U20 teams, predicting an even larger tournament next year with more teams participating.

In the spirit of youth sports, this victory not only reflects the hard work and talent of the Veiyasana Providers but also fosters hope for the future of rugby in Fiji as they pave the way for emerging players.
