The Gau Kacau rugby team, sponsored by IMAT, exemplifies the essence of faith, sacrifice, and hard work as they continue their journey in the world of 7s rugby. Together for three years, the team has made significant strides, showcasing their determination to overcome various challenges.
Recently, they reached the cup quarter-finals in the men’s tier one category of the RC Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. The team has earned a reputation as underdogs, consistently placing among the top eight in tournaments they’ve participated in. Despite their commendable progress, they remain eager for greater success.
Team captain Pei Navauvau expressed pride in their tournament performance, highlighting that their journey has seen them reach the cup quarter-finals multiple times. “Our work doesn’t stop; we strive for improvement in every tournament and are determined to reach the top soon,” he said.
As they set their sights on the prestigious local rugby 7s tournament in March 2025, the team acknowledges the challenges ahead, including securing player availability for training sessions. Many of the team members balance work and school commitments, making regular training a challenge. With some players managing to train only during midday due to work, the captain noted, “Sometimes we would have only five players at training, so that’s our biggest challenge.”
In addition to logistical hurdles, the team faces financial constraints that compel them to conduct their own fundraising efforts to support their rugby activities.
The unwavering dedication and perseverance of the Gau Kacau team paint a hopeful picture for their future in rugby. Their journey reflects the belief that with hard work and determination, they can achieve their dream of success on the field.
This narrative serves as an inspiration not just for aspiring athletes, but for anyone faced with difficulties, underscoring how collective effort, resilience, and a positive mindset can lead to overcoming obstacles in pursuit of one’s goals.
