A police officer from Vunika, Labasa is currently under investigation following an incident captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) that allegedly shows him purchasing drugs at the Labasa Market. The incident reportedly took place last Thursday and was witnessed by a former police officer who noticed the officer in uniform leaving the market with the illegal substances.
Following the receipt of a complaint, Paul Jaduram, the special administrator of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that the market master reviewed the CCTV footage and subsequently informed the Labasa Police Station, given that the individual involved was an officer of the law. Jaduram highlighted the community’s awareness regarding the involvement of some police officers in drug-related activities and encouraged residents to share any information with trustworthy individuals.
He noted that the public often reports sightings of drug dealers in the market, and the council aims to communicate these concerns to the police for swift action. Furthermore, Jaduram urged parents to be watchful as some children are reportedly engaging in drug transactions. The municipal market, being a hub of activity due to its proximity to the bus and taxi stands, requires collective efforts from the community to combat drug issues effectively.
Divisional Police Commander for the North, Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, confirmed that the investigation is currently underway, emphasizing that rooting out corruption and illegal activities is a priority.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and collaboration in addressing drug-related issues. With the ongoing investigation, there is hope that necessary actions will be taken to ensure accountability and restore public trust in law enforcement. The community’s proactive involvement and support can play a pivotal role in bringing about positive change.
