Concerns have emerged regarding underage girls allegedly sharing nude photographs for commercial purposes via the Telegram application. Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has stated that this issue is a priority for the Anti-Pornography Task Force.
Tabuya indicated that efforts to ban Telegram in Fiji are being considered, alongside measures to prohibit access to pornography for children. She highlighted the possibility of restricting social media usage for individuals aged 16 and younger, as part of broader initiatives to protect minors.
A significant number of reported cases related to children revolve around neglect. Tabuya explained that many children are left to their devices without supervision, leading to excessive screen time and diminished focus on essential daily activities. This lack of oversight is allowing children to become unproductive and vulnerable to challenges such as cyberbullying and online harassment.
In light of these pressing concerns, it’s evident that there is a strong commitment to safeguarding children’s well-being and ensuring they are protected from harmful influences in the digital landscape. The ongoing discussions and potential policy changes reflect a proactive approach to address these serious issues in society.
Summary: The Fiji government is considering banning the Telegram app and implementing further restrictions on social media access for minors due to concerns about underage girls sharing nude images and the impact of excessive screen time and neglect on children’s well-being.
