The absence of key players from the Dominion Brothers rugby team, who are away on national duties, has paved the way for its under-21 squad to take charge in the upcoming Super 7s Qualifier set for Saturday in Sigatoka. Prominent players such as Sakiusa Siqila and Filipo Bukayaro will be representing the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s teams in Cape Town, while Josese Batirerega is committed to duties in Korea.
Head coach Rokolua Manuaba has expressed confidence in the younger players, who he believes have gained valuable experience from participating in significant rugby tournaments. He emphasized the importance of this competition for the under-21 athletes as they strive to secure a spot in next month’s McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s.
“Many of our under-21 players have been gaining exposure on the field in major rugby tournaments and have been performing well,” Manuaba stated. Despite fielding a younger team, he believes they can rise to the occasion in Sigatoka.
Dominion Brothers have been placed in Pool D alongside Covenant Rugby, Ravuka Sharks, and Yalova Spearhead. Manuaba pointed out the familiarity among teams, as they have previously faced off in competitions like the Fiji Bitter 7s series. This experience could influence the dynamics of the upcoming matches.
“We might not be aware of what the Covenant Brothers team will bring; however, for Ravuka Sharks and Yalova Spearhead, we have faced them in the Fiji Bitter 7s, so we are all familiar with each other’s game structures,” he commented. Addressing their side’s strategies will be essential for gaining an edge over their rivals.
The one-day qualifier competition will unfold at Lawaqa Park, where the under-21 squad will aim to showcase their skills and determination to advance in the tournament. It presents an exciting opportunity for these young players to shine and potentially carve out their place in the Fiji rugby scene.
