The first leg of the Fiji Sports Council’s Under-20 Sevens Rugby Tournaments kicked off at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, showcasing a vibrant display of talent among the youth. With 16 men’s teams and six women’s teams participating in this one-day event, the tournament provided a much-needed platform for young athletes, typically overshadowed in larger competitions.

Tournament director Tiko Matawalu highlighted the importance of this opportunity for under-20 players. “They deserve their space,” he stated, noting that these young athletes often compete alongside more experienced open-grade players, which can detract from their visibility and chances to shine. Matawalu expressed gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council for organizing this initiative, recognizing it as a chance for young male and female rugby players to demonstrate their skills in a dedicated environment.

The support from parents and guardians played a significant role in the event’s success. Matawalu remarked on how this backing helps the athletes feel more comfortable and secure while playing. “The support from parents ensures that our children can perform in a safe space, which is crucial,” he added.

This tournament stands as a positive move towards nurturing the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of giving young players the recognition they deserve. It reflects the dedication to fostering sporting excellence among youth and creating a supportive community around them.

Overall, the initiative is a promising step forward in building a strong foundation for future rugby stars.
