The inaugural Fiji Sports Council Under 20 Sevens Rugby Tournament commenced at Thomson Park in Navua yesterday, featuring 16 men’s teams and six women’s teams in a one-day competition.

Tournament director Tiko Matawalu emphasized the significance of this event, as it allows under-20 players to finally step into the limelight after often competing in larger tournaments where they can be overlooked. “They deserve their space,” Matawalu remarked, highlighting that these young athletes usually participate alongside open-grade players who dominate the focus during such competitions.

Matawalu expressed gratitude to the Fiji Sports Council for hosting the tournament, noting that it provides a valuable opportunity for young male and female rugby players to showcase their skills independently. He acknowledged the essential support from Fiji Rugby and embraced the initiative taken by the Sports Council as a positive direction for the sport.

The event also witnessed strong backing from parents and guardians, which Matawalu considered instrumental to the players’ experience. He stated that parents feel reassured knowing their children are competing in a safe environment dedicated to their age group, fostering a supportive atmosphere on the field.

This tournament not only presents an opportunity for young athletes to shine but also strengthens the community around rugby, cultivating a nurturing environment for future stars in the sport.

In summary, the tournament serves as a vital platform for under-20 players, fostering support from families and the broader rugby community, paving the way for the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji. This initiative is a promising step forward for youth rugby, encouraging greater participation and recognition for young athletes.
