Under-17 Rugby Star Shines Amid Scout Interest: What’s Next?

Lepani Bavai, a centre for Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 rugby team, has caught the attention of international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Last Saturday, after helping his team clinch a thrilling semi-final victory over Queen Victoria School with a score of 17-15, he was approached by three scouts. MBHS is now set to face two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the U17 final scheduled for this Saturday.

In an interview with SUNsports, Bavai expressed his intent to pause any offers from scouts, stating, “I want to play rugby league. I believe it’s a calling for me, and the credit goes to my parents for always being there for me from day one. They are always my number one supporter.” He acknowledged the challenge of the semi-final match against QVS, highlighting his appreciation for his team-mates who maintained their composure throughout the game.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my school. I am looking forward to another week of playing as we have reached the final,” Bavai added.

MBHS U17 head coach Jonetani Rika also spoke with SUNsports, indicating that they would enter the final as underdogs. “We still have a lot to do. Last weekend’s game was too tight and it was too close. We will need to improve on our mistakes especially this time against Ratu Kadavulevu School,” he noted. The coach recognized RKS’s status as a champion team in secondary school rugby, emphasizing their respect for the school’s impressive track record.

Rika remarked, “We will be the underdogs. It will be a David and Goliath battle, but we are here for a reason and that is to mean business.” When questioned about potential plans should they win the U17 final and travel to Japan next year, he replied, “Right now, we have a job to do this weekend against RKS. It will be a good tussle, and the boys know it. We haven’t made our plans yet because we want the students to continue their education after Deans and do well academically.”

Bavai, a native of Makadru, Matuku in Lau, noted a rise in competition levels in this year’s Deans Trophy, with unexpected schools causing upsets.
