The recent seizure of 14.4 kilograms of methamphetamine that journeyed through Fiji from Canada to Australia underscores the ongoing challenges encountered in the fight against the illegal drug trade.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua commented on the seizure, which was reported by Australian authorities. Although Fiji served merely as a transit point in this instance, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the necessity for the nation to bolster its border security.

He pointed out that the extreme measures taken by criminals to hide the drugs were indicative of stringent border controls and the collaboration between international border authorities.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported the arrest of a Canadian national who was found with the drugs concealed in plastic packages, wrapped in towels soaked with vinegar and coffee beans.

The confiscated drugs held an estimated street value of $A13.4 million ($F19 million).

AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Steve Wiggins discussed the extensive impact of methamphetamine on the Australian community, citing more than 10,000 methamphetamine-related hospitalizations in 2021-2022.
