Unconventional Showers: A New Year’s Dilemma in Lautoka

Spread the love

In Lautoka, street dwellers have started using the water fountain at the Elizabeth Square roundabout, near the post office, to take showers. This situation was brought to public attention by Selwa Nandan, a trustee of the Western Disabled People’s Association, who witnessed this behavior on New Year’s Day. Mr. Nandan described his experience, expressing concern over the well-being of those living on the streets.

Lautoka City Council’s CEO, Mohammed Anees Khan, acknowledged the issue, stating that they are aware of individuals living on the streets and in parks. He noted that they have informed law enforcement and the Social Welfare Department about the situation. During the festive season, the council had set up a Christmas tree and lights to beautify the area and had also posted a security guard to ensure the safety of the infrastructure and its visitors. However, the presence of the guard was intended to help deter any negative activities from those living in the area.

The council’s hope was that the daytime hustle and bustle would discourage such behavior, but following Mr. Nandan’s letter highlighting the issue, the matter has been escalated to the police and social services to investigate and assist the affected individuals.

This situation highlights a pressing social concern that many communities face. While it may be alarming to see street dwellers resorting to such measures, it shines a light on the need for greater support and resources available for the homeless.

The community now has an opportunity to come together and provide positive solutions for those in need, fostering a more inclusive environment for everyone. It’s essential to focus on addressing the root causes of homelessness and providing adequate support systems to ensure that no one is left without access to basic needs.
