A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping his 13-year-old niece in Sigatoka on December 23, 2023. The 50-year-old man lured the victim into his home where the crime took place.
During the sentencing on October 11, Justice Riyaz Hamza expressed disappointment in the man’s actions, noting that as an uncle, he was expected to protect the young girl but instead grossly violated that trust.
Justice Hamza emphasized that the man took advantage of the girl’s vulnerability and innocence, resulting in the loss of her childhood purity. He remarked on the alarming frequency of rape incidents in society, particularly involving children.
A non-parole period of seven years and 77 days was also established as part of the sentence.
