A man who allowed his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle has been taken into police custody following a tragic accident in Labasa on December 4. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed the arrest.
The incident occurred in the early hours, shortly after midnight, when the victim, Shalvin Lal from Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home to meet his uncle. The accident took place at Naduna around 1 a.m., where the nephew allegedly lost control of the vehicle, leading it off the road and into a culvert. As a result of the impact, Lal tragically died.
Superintendent Soqosoqo stated that the uncle who permitted his nephew to drive is currently being interviewed at the Labasa Police Station. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Additionally, the investigation will look into the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid license.
This sad event serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the responsibilities that come with allowing someone else to operate a vehicle. It highlights the need for strict adherence to driving regulations, particularly regarding age and licensing, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In light of this incident, it is crucial for families to engage in discussions about the dangers of young, unlicensed drivers. By fostering responsible attitudes towards driving and prioritizing safety, communities can work together to reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring again.
