A man who allowed his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle, resulting in a tragic accident that occurred on December 4 in Labasa, has been taken into police custody. This development was confirmed by Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo.
The incident took place shortly after midnight when the young victim, Shalvin Lal from Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home to pick up his uncle. The accident occurred around 1 am in Naduna, where the nephew reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a culvert, leading to Lal’s death from the impact.
Superintendent Soqosoqo stated that the uncle who permitted the driving is being questioned at the Labasa Police Station, and the case will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions once the investigation is complete. Additionally, they are looking into the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license.
This unfortunate incident emphasizes the critical importance of road safety and responsible behavior, especially when it comes to young and inexperienced drivers. It serves as a reminder to everyone about the potential consequences of allowing unlicensed individuals to operate vehicles.
In light of this tragedy, it is hoped that this case will encourage discussions around driver education and restrictions on youth driving, fostering a safer environment for everyone on the road.
