A man has been taken into custody by police after allowing his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle, which led to a tragic accident on December 4 in Labasa. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed the man’s detention.
The incident occurred when the victim, identified as Shalvin Lal from Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s house just after midnight to pick up his uncle. Tragically, the accident happened shortly after 1 a.m. near Naduna. Reports indicate that the nephew lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and strike a culvert; Lal allegedly suffered fatal injuries from the crash.
Superintendent Soqosoqo noted that the man who permitted his nephew to drive will be interviewed at the Labasa Police Station. The investigation will examine both the circumstances surrounding the accident and the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This unfortunate event highlights the importance of responsible driving and the legal age requirements for obtaining a driver’s license. As the investigation continues, it serves as a reminder for guardians to prioritize safety and ensure that young individuals are not given risky freedoms that could result in such dire consequences.
In summary, an uncle’s decision to let his underage nephew drive has led to a tragic accident that claimed a young life, prompting police investigation into the circumstances and legality of the situation.
