A man who permitted his 16-year-old nephew to drive his car, which led to a tragic accident on December 4 in Labasa, has been taken into police custody. This information was confirmed by Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, the acting Divisional Police Commander for North.

The incident resulted in the death of Shalvin Lal, a 16-year-old from Tuatua, Labasa, who left his guardian’s home around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident occurred shortly after 1am in Naduna, where it is alleged that the nephew lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a culvert. According to Superintendent Soqosoqo, Lal died from the impact of the crash.

The uncle who allowed his nephew to drive is currently being questioned at the Labasa Police Station. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Authorities are also looking into the fact that Lal was driving without a valid license.

This unfortunate event highlights the critical importance of adhering to road safety laws and the potential consequences of unlicensed driving. It serves as a somber reminder for families about the responsibilities that come with allowing younger individuals to operate vehicles.

As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that lessons will be learned to prevent such tragedies in the future, emphasizing the need for responsible decision-making about driving and ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.
