A man who allowed his 16-year-old nephew to drive his vehicle has been taken into police custody following a tragic accident in Labasa that occurred on December 4. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed the development to the media.

The incident involved the victim, Shalvin Lal from Tuatua, Labasa, who left his guardian’s house around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident occurred just after 1 am in the Naduna area when the nephew reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a culvert. Unfortunately, Lal succumbed to injuries sustained from the impact.

Superintendent Soqosoqo stated that the uncle has been taken into custody for questioning at Labasa Police Station. The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Additionally, the inquiry will cover the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident.

This incident highlights the critical importance of roadway safety and responsible driving practices. While it’s a deeply unfortunate event, it serves as a poignant reminder for guardians and parents to ensure that young individuals are adequately prepared and licensed before operating a vehicle.

In summary, this tragic accident serves as a serious call to action regarding safe driving practices and the responsibilities parents and guardians hold on the road.
