A man has been taken into custody following a tragic incident involving his 16-year-old nephew, who was granted permission to drive his vehicle before a fatal accident on December 4 in Labasa. This information was provided by acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo.
The victim, Shalvin Lal, a resident of Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident occurred shortly after 1 AM at Naduna when the nephew allegedly lost control of the vehicle. As a result, the vehicle veered off the road and struck a culvert, leading to Lal’s death from the injuries sustained in the crash.
Superintendent Soqosoqo confirmed that the individual who allowed the teenager to drive has been interviewed at the Labasa Police Station. He noted that once the investigation is complete, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. He also highlighted that part of the investigation would focus on the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license.
This unfortunate incident underscores the critical importance of responsible vehicle use, particularly among young drivers. As investigations unfold, it serves as a sobering reminder for guardians and families on the importance of ensuring that young individuals do not operate vehicles without the necessary training and legal permissions. It is hoped that this tragic event prompts discussions about road safety and responsible driving, ultimately leading to safer practices for all road users.
