Residents on Chandraiya Street in Nadera, Nasinu, are struggling with a persistent foul odor due to an overflowing sewer issue. Dalip Chand, a 70-year-old local, reported that the sewer chamber outside his home has been overflowing since August. Despite multiple complaints to the Water Authority, including a visit on September 6, no remedial actions have been taken.
Chand expressed frustration over the lack of response, stating that officials have only come to inspect the site without providing a solution. The unsanitary conditions have raised concerns among residents who fear for their health.
Neighbor Roshika Singh, 45, echoed Chand’s worries, noting that visits from the Water Authority have not resulted in any effective action. She highlighted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that leaking sewage presents risks associated with germs and bacteria, which have created an unpleasant living environment. The issue has disrupted daily life, as the unpleasant smell infiltrates her home, affecting her family’s comfort.
Singh underscored the area’s close population density, insisting that the complaints warrant urgent attention since the overflowing sewer impacts not just a few individuals but the entire community. She pointed out that children also frequent the area, raising concerns about their health.
As Diwali approaches, Singh expressed anxiety over the upcoming festivities. She questioned how celebrations can be enjoyed outdoors with the overwhelming sewage smell lingering in the neighborhood. In response, a spokesperson for the Water Authority of Fiji indicated that their inspections revealed the chamber on the owner’s side was blocked, prompting a need for further action.
