The United Nations General Assembly has taken a significant step by adopting a resolution affirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. This resolution received strong backing, with 164 nations voting in favor, while only eight countries, including Israel and the United States, opposed it. Additionally, nine nations chose to abstain from voting, highlighting a divide in international opinion regarding the issue.
The resolution underscores widespread global discontent with Israel’s occupation policies and settlement expansions, which are seen as barriers to the Palestinians’ ability to exercise their rights and live with dignity. It references an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, which deems Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful and calls for its termination.
Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s Permanent Observer to the UN, expressed gratitude towards the countries that supported the resolution, emphasizing the strong international consensus surrounding the Palestinian demand for self-determination. This momentum reflects a growing acknowledgment of the need for a resolution to the longstanding conflict and a renewed hope for peace and stability in the region.
