Saimoni Uluinakauvadra is poised to make his mark as he steps into the spotlight for the Flying Fijians. The 26-year-old has been named the openside flanker for the team’s upcoming Test match against Spain in Valladolid, which will take place on Sunday, according to Fiji time.

Head coach Mick Byrne expressed confidence in Uluinakauvadra, describing him as a “very physical and fit” player ready for the demands of the position. “Sai plays really hard, and he’s just about to make his debut,” Byrne noted, emphasizing that Uluinakauvadra is a product of their development system.

Uluinakauvadra has two years of experience with the Tanihwa Northland rugby team in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship and has made significant contributions to Fijian rugby, notably as part of the Under-20 side that triumphed in the World Rugby U20 Trophy final in 2018. He also represented the Fijian Warriors during the World Rugby Pacific Challenge in 2019 and was included in the squad that achieved a narrow victory over the Barbarians at Twickenham later that year.

With the match against Spain expected to be a tough contest, coach Byrne highlighted the need for a robust defensive strategy, especially in light of recent shortcomings observed in their game against Wales. The team aims to tighten its defense while minimizing errors and enhancing their kicking game to gain crucial territory.

Byrne also addressed injuries in the squad, noting that lock Isoa Nasilasila and Vuate Karawalevu will be rested to recover from their respective injuries following the Pacific Nations Cup. He commented on the depth of the team, stating that the coaching staff has worked hard to ensure strong options in every position.

The match is set to kick-off at 2 am and promises to be an exciting opportunity for Uluinakauvadra to showcase his talent.
