Saimoni Uluinakauvadra is set to seize his opportunity as a backrower in the Flying Fijians starting line-up for their upcoming Test match against Spain in Valladolid. Head coach Mick Byrne has appointed the 26-year-old as the openside flanker, emphasizing his physicality and fitness at the number seven position. Byrne noted that Uluinakauvadra’s hard work and development through Fiji’s rugby system have prepared him for this debut.
Uluinakauvadra has played for the Tanihwa Northland rugby team in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship for the last two years. His journey includes playing for the Fiji Under-20 team that won the World Rugby U20 Trophy in 2018 and representing the Fijian Warriors at the World Rugby Pacific Challenge in 2019. This includes being part of the Flying Fijians squad that achieved a memorable victory against the Barbarians at Twickenham.
Byrne is anticipating a challenging game against Spain, highlighting that they will face a physically demanding match as the Spanish team is known for their aggressive and energetic play. The coach stressed the importance of improving their defense and reducing errors, as well as enhancing their kicking strategy to gain territorial advantage.
Unfortunately, the team will be without lock Isoa Nasilasila and Vuate Karawalevu due to injuries, but Byrne remains optimistic as they have worked on building depth in every position.
The match is set to kick off at 2 AM in Fiji time, and the Flying Fijians hope to make a strong impression on the field.
Fiji’s line-up includes a mix of experienced and talented players, showcasing the nation’s deep pool of rugby talent that holds promise for a bright future.
This match not only represents an opportunity for Uluinakauvadra to shine but also reinforces Fiji’s commitment to nurturing young athletes through their robust rugby development programs. The team’s resilience and adaptability will be crucial as they head into this physical encounter.
