The Rotaract Club of Suva recently donated an ultrasound system to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. This generous gesture was coordinated by Dr. John Salmon, a Melbourne-based Rotarian and former lecturer at Fiji National University, along with local Suva Rotaractor Clifford Smith from Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd.
Dr. Anisi Kavoa, the ICU clinical lead at CWM Hospital, expressed his appreciation for the donated machine, which is expected to significantly aid not only ICU patients but also those in other departments within the hospital’s east wing.
Margret Savou, the president of the Rotaract Club of Suva, noted that this donation is part of a broader initiative aimed at alleviating capacity constraints at the hospital, enhancing the quality of care provided to patients. She acknowledged the vital logistical support from Shipping Services (Fiji) Pte Ltd, which was instrumental in facilitating this donation.
Earlier this year, under the leadership of former president Kelera Kuboutawa, the Rotaract Club also delivered essential medical equipment, including a respiratory monitor, dispersers, teaching displays, and various monitoring devices. Last year, the club had previously provided another ultrasound system to the obstetrics and gynecology department.
The Rotaract Club of Suva, the oldest in the South Pacific, was chartered on October 23, 1970, by the Rotary Club of Suva. Rotaract clubs aim to bring together individuals aged 18 and older to exchange ideas with community leaders, develop professional skills, and engage in service-oriented activities, fostering a spirit of cooperation and community improvement.
This initiative not only reflects the ongoing commitment of the Rotaract Club to healthcare excellence in Fiji but also showcases how collaboration and community partnerships can make a substantial difference in improving patient care. As hospitals strive to enhance their capabilities and address the healthcare needs of the population, such donations are a beacon of hope and exemplify the positive impact of community service.
